Growing Up

Candice from Mille Lacs County Public Health visited Milaca Elementary fourth grade today to talk to our girls about growing up.

We started out by handing out a bright pink handout. Next, we handed out sticky notes for the girls to write down their questions during their presentation.

She talked about the different hormones in our bodies, and the changes of each hormone. She talked about hygiene, and how we should shower, wash our hair, use soap, and apply deodorant. Candice talked about the many different types of deodorant and asking for help in finding the kind that is best for us. She introduced a variety of terms for acne, how it develops, how we can prevent it, and how we can treat acne. She introduced how we know when we need to wear bras.

Then we watched a video. If an adult is interested in viewing the video, please email Ms. Leom (at michele.leom@milaca.k12.mn.us), and she will be happy to send you the link!

The video gives an overview of the whole growing up process for girls. Candice took an opportunity to answer some of the questions students had written on their notes. She talked us through where we can get supplies we might need when we are in school (nurses' office).

Finally, we encouraged the girls the share their information with their adults at home. We encouraged them to start the conversation with their adults and ask their questions. Sometimes adults don't know how to start the conversation or what their children are thinking about, but they are often open to the discussion and the opportunity to answer their children's questions.
