Bus Safety

Every year, students must learn about bus safety. We started by creating a K-W-L Chart on our Smart Board.

Our smart board is a tool we use in the classroom. It has too many purposes and advantages to list in one (or hundreds) of blog posts. It is a learning goal for this year, that ALL students in class will have MANY opportunities to use and learn with this important technology. Today, volunteers recorded our ideas. Soon, students will learn to navigate and use the software as well.

First, we listed what we KNEW ("K") about bus safety. Next, we wrote about what we thought we WANTED to know ("W"). Then, we read the School Bus Safety Rules together. We underlined with a pencil the rules that we had already recorded and talked about. We highlighted the rules we didn't know. Finally, we summarized what we LEARNED ("L").

You might notice, our lesson also included a mini lesson on types of text: titles, and the use of bullets, hyphens, and the use of an astrix. Our school day is never dull, and there are many lessons and learning opportunities that occur without planning. (This is a reason why it is hard to prepare work for absences ahead of time. Today, the lesson on types of text was realized in class, during the lesson. It can be added for a student when they return, but would be impossible to anticipate before the absence).

Tonight, students are asked to reread the bus safety rules we read together in class. They may count it toward their reading calendars. There are some fun pages for students who like puzzles. These will not be graded and do not need to be turned into Ms. Leom. We will practice the rules tomorrow (Friday) in class on "Ms. Leom's bus".
We watched a video to review the rules
Ten feet (or 2 fourth graders) around the bus is the danger zone

On Monday, we will prepare and take a test on the bus unit.

Soon, there will be a scheduled opportunity to practice our skills with one of our Milaca School Bus Drivers on his or her bus.

We're "on the road", heading toward our bright futures!

  1. Thank you for this blog, Ms. Leom! As the parent of a student who too often replies, "I don't know, not much", when asked what he did or learned at school, I appreciate being able to take a peek into his day and see that he did, in fact, learn something! :o)
I'll be checking this blog daily! Keep up the great work!
