Fluency Testing

At Milaca Elementary, we assess students in several ways to collect data to make decisions for each individual student. "Fluency" is one assessment we use. Fluency is assesses how smoothly students read in one minute (words per minute). We encourage students to read "like you talk", to use expression with minimal errors. Our Title One teachers assess students three times a year (September, January, and May). Students who are progressing toward their learning goals are assessed more frequently.

This morning, was the fourth grade fluency testing. Classes took turns being tested. There were two rooms of staff members assessing students. The teachers use computers to record student progress. It is immediately recorded and available to access the information. Ms. Leom's class wrote in journals or read quietly while they waited their turn.
