Beach Day

Beach Day started over fifteen years ago, when Ms. Leom took a trip to Mexico with two other teachers from Milaca Schools. We visited the pyramids, a sea turtle sanctuary, and more. We wanted to bring some of our experiences back to our third and second grade students. The first year, it was a beautiful, sunny, sixty-degree day. We enjoyed our picnic lunch on beach towels, outside, in the thick, green grass. Ms. Leom "looped" the following year from third grade, into fourth grade, and her students begged for another Beach Day. A tradition was born. A few years later, when we were looking for ways to invite parents and families into school, all of fourth grade adopted Beach Day. We look forward to the day each year! It has changed throughout the years ... there was once "Leom Dollars" and a store to practice making change with fruity drinks, chips and salsa ... there were stations with sand castles to build, postcards to write, and beach volleyball math facts ... No matter the year, there were academic goals and learning being integrated.

As for this year, we had a READING MARATHON. The students said it was the "fastest day of the year". We enjoyed some chips and salsa for snack break. Then we invited our parents to join us for lunch as we worked on our Reading Marathon learning. It was a fun-filled day. Here are some images from today ...

Even though they were invited to "just eat", they read!

LOVED having families join us!!

Life is a beach!

Reading at the Beach

The weather outside was better than the 13" of snow that arrived in Southern Minnesota ... it was a balmy, beachy day in fourth grade!
