Today we walked to the District Board Room to try out various band instruments. Mrs. Hogan, our music teacher, and Mr. Garber, the seventh and eighth grade band director, spent several class periods introducing the instruments to us and preparing us.
Several experts in band instruction from the area represented Eckoff Music to provide this individual instrument trial for us.
You will notice bottles of green sanitizer at each station that is used between students.
The experts are quick, patient, and very helpful in redirecting students to encourage their success. They are also honest. They want students to participate in band, and they want them to experience success. For some students, the instruments they wanted to play were not necessarily the same instruments they were able to achieve a sound.
Students were scored on a 1-5 scale. A "one" means the student struggled to make a sound. A "three" indicates an instrument that could be a comfortable fit for a student. A score of a "four" or "five" shows an area of real strength. Students needed two years of piano to participate in the percussion station.
