Olweus

Ms. Leom's homeroom had their second Olweus Meeting today. It was planned for Wednesday, and with MAP Testing, we had to be flexible with our timing.

Our first meeting was on our first day of school, when we started to learn how to play Cat's Cradle, and what was important to our class in learning something new.

We've had several mini-lessons and conversations nearly every day since. On Wednesdays, Captain Olweus, Friendship Girl, and Tucker Turtle are on Morning Announcements with an important topic. We always stop announcements and have our own discussion. When moments happen, often the kind things we see and do, we stop and acknowledge them.

Mr. Greninger had students in his math classes empty tubes of toothpaste and use toothpicks to try to fill in the tubes again. They had an important discussion about choosing and using our words carefully. It is fun when students initiate conversations and reference toothpaste!

Today started by identifying, "What is Olweus?" and what do you think it means in Milaca Elementary? What does it look like to you? What is our culture?

Then we started a discussion about the four rules. We only got to the first rule and defining bullying. It is an important conversation, one that can't be rushed.

This is how we begin our Olweus Meetings. We start the conversations. We begin making connections.
