Postcards

During Social Studies today, Ms. Leom took her collection of postcards down off the wall.
Then the class set up the five regions of the United States. Each table was assigned a region. We wrote the legend (a feature of informational text) on the board. We had the front map available to name the states, and the back map that uses colors to organize the regions. Students were handed postcards, brochures, and our coloring book to sort by the region.

 They had to work together.

Next, students had time to sit, read, and share all the materials.

We no longer have the class time to read each individual card caption and message to the entire class, so we found another way to share the valuable information arriving. The postcards are now organized into a basket on the back counter. We will continue to show each postcard that arrives, hand it to the student that it is addressed to, and color the states on our map as an entire class. The postcards and materials will be stored in the bin for any interested student or guest to read.

As of noon, Mr. Greninger is in the lead with 35 cards. Ms. Leom follows with 29. Mr. Lundeen and Ms. Prose have counts in the 20s. Mrs. Aren's class is at 19 cards.

Mr. Greninger's class needs: Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Arkansas, Vermont, Delaware, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, West Virginia, Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Ms. Leom's class needs: Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

Please remember, we have both received postcards from some of these listed states, but they were mailed in envelopes, missing the postmark from the state or mailed from another location. We welcome the learning opportunities no matter how they arrive! For the race itself, we are playing with integrity.
