Prepare to be SLIMED!

Another highlight at Milaca Elementary is our yearly pepfest to celebrate, "I Love to Read" month. This year, our theme is

So the elementary school, with our 1000 students and staff gathered in the gyms

Our pepfest starts with the Sun and planets are out of alignment ... Mr. Hansen receives a call ...
video of Mr. Hanson in his office taking the call
Mr. Hanson calls Captain Voshell and Captain Meyer
Soon our very own astronauts arrive to our rescue ...

Captains Voshell and Captain Meyer go right to work. They meet with the sun to determine what they can do to help the planets ...

The answer, is books! The planets need to read and learn more about themselves, so they can realign and orbit the sun ...

Success!
Then Superintendent Hanson spoke. He shared a favorite book from his childhood that predicted space travel, landing on the moon, and a space station. It is thrilling to know, that these events happened. They are no longer fantasy, but facts. He also brought a gift he received from his parents, a telescope. He encouraged us to read, to dream, and imagine...

Mrs. Hogan (Music), Mrs. Lawson (Music), Mrs. Hoehn (3rd grade), Mrs. Hakes-Anderson (3rd grade), Mrs. Vickers (Media), Mrs. Geurkink (Title One), and Mrs. Hobert (1rst grade) encouraged us to read to the Star Wars theme song.

Our next exciting guest, was the High School Science teacher,

He shared his love of reading about Science, a video about an experiment on the moon, and conducted REAL experiments about gravity for the entire school!
a bowling ball and a basketball ball ...

Next, Mr. Meyer talked about Pennies for Patients. It is a cause that is special to us at Milaca Elementary, because we have students and families that benefit from our fundraising efforts! Mr. Meyer invited one of our own special ambassadors down to share the message.

Every year, Mr. Meyer and Mr. Voshell welcome the opportunity to challenge the Elementary School to meet a goal. Last year, students were able to vote on four (disgusting) food choices (anchovies in hot sauce  ... anyone ... ? Yuck!) Another year, Mr. Meyer shaved his head ...

(shaving his head is not quite a new idea for Mr. Voshell, so he wore a wig ...)
or the year Mr. Voshell and Mr. Meyer slept OVERNIGHT on the ROOF of the school! Our administrators are willing to go to great lengths if our students met their Reading goals and our Pennies for Patients fundraising goals.
If we succeed, this year, Mr. Meyer and Mr. Voshell will be SLIMED! (Mr. Meyer even "suggested" our Pennies for Patients student, pictured above, join them ... he was less than enthusiastic about the idea, so Mr. Meyer told him he had the entire month to "think on it" ...) Our classes decided we didn't need to "think about it" ... watching Mr. Meyer and Mr. Voshell getting slimed ... will be something to see!

We are collecting our pennies - every penny makes a difference, and we are reading, because every minute counts. Game on, Mr. Voshell and Mr. Meyer! Prepare to be SLIMED!
