We had a fun day of exploring and making memories.

Testing Afternoon

Some students still needed time to test for the MCA Math Test. So one room continued testing, and the second room had some different activities. We "read" a book on The Math Curse from a video. Then we read another book with pairs from the same author and illustrator, The Stinky Cheese Man.

Test Break

When we took our MCA Math Test, we took a test break. In the preschool hallway, near the nurse's office, there is an area for students to run an obstacle course.

It was the perfect break for our brains and woke up our bodies, ready for the next part of the test.

Ready to Run

One day, Ms. Leom's homeroom was waiting for our music teacher, Ms. Aeling. She was walking her previous class to meet their teacher. So we slipped out the district office doors and ran the pillars and back. It was a beautiful spring day, and we were ready to run. The students were so quiet and quick, we all giggled to ourselves when Ms. Aeling returned and didn't even know we took a break while waiting for her.

Anticipation and Mood

Our recent fluency lessons for our reader's theater week was about anticipation and mood. We talked about how in life we anticipate different things ... what we are looking forward to ... or anticipation could include events we are nervous or worried about. Then we talked about how as readers when we are working on a readers theater, when we read several times, we should anticipate what will happen next in the text, and plan to change our voices to fit the mood, or emotion of the story.

Poetry Writing

We started poetry writing. April is National Poetry Month. At the introduction of each poem, we write a poem together to model how we go about writing it.

We are having fun!

Phrases

This morning, we reread to study phrases.

We combined our figurative language and tall tale genre study. Ms. Leom introduced and modeled for the class, then students worked in pairs (or with Ms. Leom in a small group), and we reread the text to study the phrasing. At the end of class, we met to discuss our learning. Fun!

Studying MW

One way we prepared for the Capitals and States Test, we drew our own mental map of the Midwest and labeled the capitals and states.

Swimming

On April 16th, fourth graders walked to the high school pool to swim for the MCA Reading Test Reward.

Ms. Leom tried to take a picture of every student ... sometimes the water covers the best smiles and having fun is a great reason to miss a smiling face.
