Science

Mr. Greninger teaches Science. It is a favorite subject for many of our students. Mr. Greninger teaches the Scientific Method. He uses the F.O.S.S. Curriculum (check out F.O.S.S.com for more information). F.O.S.S. stands for "Full Option Science System".

There are four units of learning in fourth grade. The units are taught in various orders, to share materials with the other fourth grade classes.

One kit is the Water Unit. Students investigate heating and cooling can change properties of water. They look at the water cycle and the impact of humans in the environment.

In the Magnetism and Electricity Unit, students explore the relationship between electricity and magnits. Students create circuits and use various materials to expand their understanding.

Ideas and Inventions is a unit where students look at patterns, investigate interactions, and participate in controlled scientific investigations using rubbings, carbon printing, and more.

The Human Body is another area of learning. We look at the structures (bones, nerves) and the various functions of the body. Students also look at characteristics.

Additonal Science and Health learning include: Bus Safety (taught by homeroom teachers for their own classes), Fire Safety, Summer Safety, Emergency Situations, Mental and Emotional Health (identifying your feelings and coping strategies, knowing yourself, friendships and basic coflict resolutions), and Physical Health (taking care of your body: nutrition and eating healthy, dental health, hearing and vision).

Science is taught from 11:30 to 12:30 daily. Students have three weeks with Mr. Greninger (while Ms. Leom teaches Social Studies), then classes rotate.
