P.I.E. Day

Today is one of Ms. Leom's FAVORITE days of the ENTIRE school year ... P to the I to the E! One skill we develop in fourth grade is "focus skills", sometimes known as "comprehension strategies". Figuring out the "Author's Purpose" is an important reading strategy! We affectionately call it "P.I.E." P.I.E. stands for the three reasons author's write, to PERSUADE, to INFORM, and to ENTERTAIN. We spend time talking about it in class, but we like to take a day to extend our learning, and bring the learning to life!

Today, students had many opportunities to "study" P.I.E.! We made chef's hats (entertaining), we read about the history of pie (informational), we taste tested apple pie, pumpkin pie, and strawberry-rhubarb pie and graphed our favorite kind (because how can you ignore the obvious PIE reference when pie, the dessert, is so abundant this time of year?!). We made author's purpose posters and used old book orders to sort books into the different types of purposes - and a ZING! of excitement tingled down Ms. Leom's spine, when students noticed that toys and sales bubbles often were a part of the book catalogs to PERSUADE you to buy! Lastly, we summarized our learning. What a day!

Ms. Leom's class had more class time. They watched a video of an actress reading, Enemy Pie. They also journaled about their two days of extravaganzas!

Special thanks to Ms. Prose ... this is a learning extravaganza that was developed and refined over many years of teaching together! It is only improved with time and the sharing of ideas!

Special thanks to Mr. Leom who picked up the 12 pies!!!
