Veteran's Day

There are several skills fourth graders need to be developing. In the past two months, students have had the opportunity to use "open notes" and "open books" on several quizzes and tests. When students use these opportunities, they are often successful. When students choose NOT to use these opportunities it is an area of concern, making a teacher wonder maybe ... "students don't know HOW" to use these materials. We've talked about using "titles, headings, pictures, captions, and text", but it appeared our fourth graders needed practice and support. The timing couldn't have been better. Using Veteran's Day as our topic, students worked with a partner to answer questions using a resource. Students needed to use titles, headings, pictures, captions, and text to find the information. When students finished, they were invited to read the pages and specific topics that interested them. Students were encouraged to work with someone they have not worked with yet this year, or they could work independently. Ms. Leom walked around the room, and helped students determine "key words and phrases" in the questions and to offer encouragement.

Students also listened to the Star Spangled Banner and Taps to connect to the information we were learning about. Many students shared their own connections to Veteran's Day. Over 90% of our students knew someone who was a member of the military. Students could connect the Star Spangled Banner to the Olympics, football games, and more. It is exciting when there is a buzz about our learning ...

Thank you to all the men, women, and their families who are serving or have served in the military! Your sacrifices are remembered, important, and valued.

Soon, we will be "adopting" a Milaca man as he begins his military journey by sending him letters and sharing our Milaca pride ... stay tuned!
