Writing

In May, fourth graders start writing their books to self publish. We celebrate our writing accomplishment by sharing our books the last week of school at our "Book Breakfast" where parents and family members are invited to read our books.

This year, Ms. Leom was THRILLED to have local professional writer and author, Christine Nelson visit our school and share her writing experiences! In addition to being a writer and author, Christine has experience as a journalist, small business consultant, editor, blogger, and more! It was exciting to have a local expert share her many experiences with our writers!!

All five fourth grade classes enthusiastically participated in the opportunity to brainstorm a character and plot together!

Our writer started in Ms. Leom's classroom to present to Ms. Leom and Ms. Prose's fourth grade classes. Then she moved to the Media Center to present to Mr. Greninger, Mr. Lundeen, and Mrs. Aren's fourth grade students. We appreciate her time and willingness to share with all of our writers!

She even read her book to us!!
Mrs. Nelson wrote her book, Nat Knows Bananas in 2005 with her sister. The book is written for preschoolers about waiting for bananas to turn yellow. The proceeds of the book helped fund the building of the Milaca Library! This summer, in July, she will return to the Milaca Library to present and share her book with young readers and their families. The proceeds of her book sales will support the Milaca Pantry. If you know of a young reader, this might be a fun opportunity!!

We were excited to hear her talk about theme, genres, and plot, all writing terms we have learned and practiced throughout our fourth grade year! We are excited to start our book publishing projects!! A BIG THANKS to Christine Nelson for sharing her time and talents with us!!
