First, we have our core lessons. We are learning about the Persuasive Letters genre. We took notes earlier in the week, we are reading examples, and today, we were making connections and comparing two different letters. We read the letters in class and discussed the different features. Next, we took notes on the different ways we would compare the texts (the problem, the argument, etc.). Finally students worked with a partner or a group (no more than three people) to reread and find examples.
By working together, students were able to dialogue and explain why something would fit as an example or not work. The students may not be aware, but our seating chart, and their partners, are carefully planned to fit their individual strengths and offer support. There is some data used in placing students into partnerships, but making connections with students, observing what causes them anxiety or motivates them is used for their benefit. Sometimes a partnerships flourishes, other times, it needs an intervention, or it may need to change. Walking around the classroom, answering questions, monitoring student progress, sharing feedback, all helps optimize learning for each individual student. Today, appeared to have many successful learning experiences.
After our Benchmark Literacy Learning, we took some time to mod-podge ... decorating the covers of our poetry notebooks ...
