Lunch Time!

In December, students were invited to read a book. When we returned to school after Winter Break, we spent four school days, and over two hours creating Book Project Placemats. Each day, we did a different step, starting with the border, followed by the plate, the utensils, and a final day to finish up. About a handful of students needed more time to finish up, related to absences during the week.

The following week, with several days of indoor recess related to the cold, we postponed our sharing. We try to make decisions based on "What is best for students?" Spending an entire day in one or two rooms is a concern. We were also wanting all students to participate and gave daily reminders in missing work, so students could finish up and join us.

Finally, two days after we started, it was THE DAY. Students were invited into the room to eat their lunch and share their Book Project Placemats. It was a great day! We talked about manners and how to present to a small group. Presenters were invited to sit or stand, whatever was most comfortable for them. The audiences were encouraged to listen respectfully and eat.

The reading teacher in me loved hearing all the great discussions about books, plots, characters, problems, and resolutions. What amazing students and GREAT READERS!!!
