iPads

Today, we were the FIRST elementary classroom to use the iPad cart in our classroom!! Students used the iPads to research for their Southeast State Projects, a brochure.

Students started their research on the Milaca Schools Web page.  Next, using the top menu, we selected, "Resources".
Then, we selected "Kurth Media Center".
After that, we used the left side menu to select, "Student Resources". Ms. Leom showed us two links we could use for our research. 50states.com and the Kids ELMs Databases.
WHY? Why do we NEED to use technology for our research? Below is a picture of two or our books we are using in class. One of the resources is our Social Studies text book. One of the resources is a library book. It shows us two flags for Louisiana. For students, why are there two flags featured? Which is the correct flag? Great questions! The truth, our print resources can be out of date quickly. Our electronic resources are constantly updated to reflect the most accurate information.
 This is the iPad Cart.
Mrs. Mickelson was able to join us in the beginning our class to support our success.
Our students were engaged, focused, and actively learning.

One of our best "aha" moments of our learning today, was the unplanned lesson about synonyms (words that mean the same). As a student was looking up "Louisiana Land", the search engine was sharing sites about various land all over the world, types of soil, and not related to the "landforms" and "geographic features" the student had in mind. Using synonyms when searching for information on-line is a necessary skill. Learning synonyms had an application for students. It had a purpose and meaning. Technology offers opportunities and extensions to our learning that are not always available using traditional tools.

Another "aha" moment, spelling terms correctly matters. It is difficult to look up information about famous people from your state when you are spelling, "Jon Smith", and you need "John Smith". It is also helpful to record a detail about what makes them famous, "John Smith, musician" versus "John Smith, politician" can streamline your search.

I also appreciate how iPads are touch sensitive. If you accidentally touch the screen, it can take you to a link as you blink. Students learn very quickly how to correct their errors. They are intent on their goal, that they don't allow the challenges and road blocks get in their way of their success.

In addition, students WANT TO BE INDEPENDENT on the iPads. They listen very closely to directions. They are team players and helpful to their peers.

Today, I saw the potential of what is possible with technology in the classroom. I've had glimpses before. I could easily see our entire day using the iPad to support our learning. Technology won't completely replace our learning, but the potential to enhance and engage is staggering.

Mr. Greninger's class will be participating in iPad research in the coming month, when they return to Social Studies. Such an exciting time to be in education!!!
