Author Visit

Today, Milaca Elementary welcomed Minnesota author Laura Purdie Salas! We walked to Dahlager Theater in the high school to share in her writing gifts.

a fourth grade student introduced her

Laura talks about writing a poem for this picture for a book

Laura as a girl growing up in Florida. She wanted to be a veterinarian.
So interesting!
When you grow up in Florida, you can always go outside to play. Laura like to read.
 Laura has many books published.

One of her books was translated into Chinese!
Laura walked throughout the theater, engaging all the listeners. Students turned to follow what she had to say.
Laura shared some of her poems with us. We practiced and took turns reading.

Then she had us writing a poem together! She asked for fourth grader in put. We had a picture of a space rover and mashed it together with a spider.
our poem we wrote

Laura shared how books are published. Showing the uncut pages to one of her books.
She showed us that the pages are folded, before each edge is chopped with a large paper cutter.
Then she showed us how the pages are sewed to make a binding. Finally, how the book is added to the cover.
The process to publishing a book was exciting, because at the end of the school year, fourth graders will be writing and publishing their own books!!
Our Media Specialist, Mrs. Vickers watches. She had an important role in making today happen.
So THANKFUL our school provides these learning opportunities to our school and community! Thank you Laura Purdie Salas for visiting our school today and sharing your exciting career with us!!
