Theme

This week, we started our new focus skill (reading strategy), THEME. Theme is the author's message, moral, or lesson. Sometimes the theme is stated at the end of the story (rare), and most the time the theme is implied. When the theme is implied, students need to look at the title, the setting, what the character says, does, and thinks, and the character's motivation to draw a conclusion about the theme.

This week, Ms. Leom shared her all-time favorite book, Tacky the Penguin to introduce theme. (Note: You may NOT want to hear her read it ... Tacky is a horrible singer ...  Ms. Leom rises to the ocassion of using her best reading expression to capture the character ... it really is horrible!)
Theme: "Tacky was an odd bird, but a nice bird to have around."
