We are working on all the parts of a friendly letter. This includes knowing our address. Students were asked to bring in their address. We had a formal lesson of the parts and the format of addresses.
Students practiced writing their address. Then the "testing" begins. At the beginning of each writing class, we will take a quiz of our address. Students who know their address, earn a "kiss for your brain" (the Hershey's kind), and they do not have to take the test again. They are invited for some "free iPad" time - if they have all their missing work complete - while other students test until everyone remembers their address.
Knowing your address is a life skill in fourth grade. This is the age, when students might participate in various activities or spend time with friends away from home. Knowing your address can get you home to the right house. It is an age when parents feel comfortable visiting with the neighbors, allowing students some time at home alone. Another reason, sometimes emergencies come up - a neighbor runs over when their house catches fire, or there is a car accident, and students might need to call 9-1-1. Operators will often verify the address as they send out emergency services.
Meanwhile, we are working on the parts of a friendly letter. Keep practicing your address!
