The Next Story

When studying historical fiction ... we read two short stories and practiced together. On Wednesday and Thursday. We read a longer text. Before we started, we built some background knowledge, sharing what we knew about Pearl Harbor, and even taking two minutes to do a web search on-line ...

Some students read text about Pearl Harbor ...

Some students looked at Pearl Harbor images ...

Other students looked at maps ...

Building background knowledge is an important step to support our comprehension as we read.

On both days, students read with a partner. They enjoyed the text, and looked for historical fiction features, places they visualized, places they made inferences, and vocabulary words that were new to them ...

On the second day, we reread the text, with different partners, and students were looking for sensory details they found in the story, what they could see, hear, smell, taste, and touch.
