We had our first Olweus meeting today. Olweus is the program we use at Milaca Elementary to prevent bullying. Since it was the first week, Ms. Leom decided to add a lesson. The first lessons are to go over the four rules:
1.) We will not bully others.
2.) We will try to help students who are being bullied.
3.) We will try to include students who are left out.
4.) If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
Before we could begin with rule number one: we will not bully others, we have to start with ourselves ...
We will not bully ourselves. A profound silence followed this statement. Ms. Leom explained that sometimes the worst "bully" is the voice in our own head that says ... "I'm not good enough / fast enough / smart enough ..." We developed this idea in class. In our classroom, we are not completing with our classmates. Our common goal is that we learn and improve. We are in our classroom to work together to achieve our goal, learning. We talked about messages we could share with each other to encourage each other and support each other. We listed our ideas on the board.
Then we worked on creating cards we can post.
Although, Mr. Grenigner has his own Olweus lessons with his class, today we developed this lesson about not bullying ourselves with Mr. Greninger's class also. Together, we can be successful learners!
