Spelling Homework

Today Ms. Leom started our first Spelling lesson of the new year. In our new curriculum, "Spelling" is referred to "Word Work". We'll continue to use "Spelling" in class.

Today's lesson started with introducing the word pattern for the week, Hypenated Compound words. First we defined the words. Then shared examples. Using the notes page, we learned more about our pattern.

Next Ms. Leom had students place this page in their blue, HERO Home Folder on the "Take Home LEFT at Home" side. We looked at our spelling words on the green pages in the prongs of our folder. This week, for our test on Friday, we will study:

close-up, get-together, twenty-one, high-tech, one-sided, well-being, in-depth, life-size

Next, Ms. Leom handed out the homework page for the week. It is a two-sided copy.

We write on name on the top of the page. In the top right corner, we write, "HOMEWORK", then "DUE F 9/18", and "2 sides". Then we read through the directions. We read through the word bank, and we begin the assignment together.

Next, we flip our paper over and repeat: write our name, write "HOMEWORK", the due date, and that it is two pages. We read the directions and model how to do the assignment. We talked about how spelling counts, because the words are available ON the page, and how since our pattern includes a hyphen this week, students need to write a hyphen in their words.

We talk about strategies if we get stuck.
1.) read the directions and try
2.) ask for help at home
3.) bring it back to school and ask Ms. Leom. She is available and more than willing to help students.

Then, students place the paper in their blue, HERO Homework Folders on the "Bring it RIGHT Back" side. It is due Friday. Students may complete it early and turn it in when it is finished.

At the end of the day, students had twenty minutes of class time to work on their spelling homework while Ms. Leom worked with students on missing work and organizing their planners. Only three students of 25, chose to turn in their spelling homework before the end of the school day.

The idea of Spelling is to give students additional practice on our weekly learning skills. We also want students to develop their responsibility, organizational, and time management skills.
