Against the Wall took on a new meaning this week. A month ago, Ms. Leom, in her parent role, managed to make it to the Milaca High School to deliver pans of bars for the Milaca Varsity Speech Meet. It was an earlier time on a Saturday morning, and Ms. Leom was still half asleep. She walked into the high school, turned right at the Big M, walked by the high school office, and meandered her way to the long, straight hallway that leads to the cafeteria and the pool. Along the wall way, to her surprise, on both sides, was filled with high school students, dressed professionally, talking animately to the wall, preparing for their speeches. It was like an episode of a Goosebumps story (for adults, the
Twilight Zone might be the comparison). It was awe-some and inspiring. There are some talented speakers in Central Minnesota! If this is a strategy they use to be successful ... it should be added to our practice as we memorize our poems!
We practiced our poems three times against the wall. We could use our notes if we needed them. Pretty fun to watch the intensity and work of our students!
The students appeared to like it, and several said they wanted to do this strategy again.
