In Math, we had time to play a game.
The skills we are working on:
A Math Mountain is a way we organize our addition and subtraction problems to show how addition and subtraction are connected.
Math Mountain
5 total or sum
/ \
2 3 partner numbers or addends
We can write math mountains into math expressions or number sentences
2 + 3 = 5
3 + 2 = 5
5 - 2 = 3
5 - 3 = 2
or
5 = 2 + 3
5 = 3 + 2
2 = 5 - 3
3 = 5 - 2
The directions:
- students work in pairs
- they shake two number cubes
- the total of the two number cubes are the total or sum, the top of the math mountain
- each number cube is a partner number or addend
- partners write the numbers into a math mountain
- then partners write the numbers from the math mountain into four expressions
Ms. Leom was able to walk around and support students and partners, by giving feedback, reteaching, and celebrating their success. It was a great day of math learning!
