Future Teachers

It was official. Today, fourth graders "taught" the Spelling lessons, with support from Ms. Leom.

This is our sixth week of Spelling. The routine has been established. Taking volunteers, students introduced and taught the Spelling pattern of long and short I to the class.

Students directed and modeled writing their name on their "paper" and setting up the "homework", due date and "2 sides" reminders.

We had a necessary lesson about how teachers should face the class when teaching and project their voices so students can hear the lesson clearly. Sometimes teachers will use tools or props in order to face the class as they teach.

Our volunteer teachers read the directions, modeled the pronounciation of all the words in the word bank, and broke down the steps to successfully sorting the words.
1. Read the word
2. Identify the pattern
3. Sort the word into the correct category
4. Carefully copy the word
5. Cross off the word you sorted in the word bank

To move it along, Ms. Leom quickly wrote on the back page, then another teacher came up to read the directions and model for the class.

By this time, more and more students were feeling confident and interested in teaching. Ms. Leom used her cup of sticks. She would pull a name, and the student could choose to teach or pass.

It is said that if you only really know a skill when you can teach it to someone else.

So proud of all my volunteers, my learners / my teachers, and my engaged class who is changing the way we can be successful!

Note: as students are teaching, Ms. Leom is not sitting at her desk drinking coffee - if she liked coffee - she was walking around the classroom, monitoring students, reteaching examples, helping transition and coaching the lesson in the front of the room, and cheering these developing leadership and speaking skills - while capturing an image or two. ;)
