In Benchmark Literacy, our curriculum is organized into three week units. The first week is the reading strategy. The second week is a genre (what type of story: biography, poetry, etc.), and the third week is a focus on a fluency strategy.
We started learning about fluency today. We had set goals on the board when we started our lesson. We talked about reasons we might read fast or read slow. Our discussion had us defining the newer terms in the goals. "Varies" means to change. "Pacing" is the speed at which we read. We talked about using punctuation and more to determine how we should adjust our pacing.
We used a dialogue between two friends, that we read independently, then Ms. Leom reread it to us. She reread it a third time to model different pacing. Then she sent us around the room to practice.
For the first day or our learning to read with effective pacing, we sounded pretty good. We have some more work to do, and luckily for us, Ms. Leom has it all planned out!!
