Twenty-one years ago, Ms. Leom started Beach Day with her students. She returned from a vacation to Cancun, and she wanted to share the experience with her students. At that time, it was a full day learning extravaganza with math activities and various centers. Several years ago, when Ms. Leom was training for a (running) marathon, she was inspired to change the approach to a reading marathon. Students read for ten minutes, then work on a reading poster for ten minutes throughout the day. They continue to have Math and Specials. One tradition remains, for lunch, parents are invited to Beach Leom to share in our day.
Sometimes, sunny Fridays at the end of the school year can be hard to motivate coming to school ... our Beach Day is just one of those days that we celebrate being a fourth grader, and do what we do with the smell of sunscreen, the sound of waves, as we lay on our towels, soaking up time with our classmates.
