Students have a paper with their name on it. The paper is slowly passed around the room. Using our Character Traits charts, in our home folders, students write something they appreciate about every student in the class. Examples are encouraged. When students are finished, Ms. Leom types them up, polishing up spelling, grammar, and the odd comment here and there that sounds right to a fourth grader, but an adult might have an alternate thought about it ... Then she prints, laminates, and shares the posters with students. It can take several days for the typing up 20-plus comments for 40-plus students. When the posters are finished, they will be something special!!
Here was the start of our work ...
There is a lot of talk and focus about the concerning things that are said and shared by students to each other. We make a point to focus on the strengths, gifts, and character traits we appreciate. Sometimes, we get so stuck on a negative experience that happened to us, that we forget there are twenty other classmates in our class that see more of us. It all matters. We can all use a SELF POSTER to remind us of who we are by the people who sometimes know us better than we realize.
