Spelling Week 2

Our spelling lessons are explicitly taught. We go beyond getting a list of words to memorize for the end of the week. There are basic rules in English, and when we learn them, it can help us spell other words with the same pattern.

Both in Week 2 and Week 3 we are learning the spelling pattern for adding -ing. In Week 2, we are focused on what happens when you have a VC (vowel-consonant). We took time to review what a vowel and consonant include. If we add -ing to a VC ending word, like hop, without adding a doubling the consonant, instead of "hopping", we have "hoping". If the word ends with a VCC (vowel-consonant-consonant), we can just add the -ing without any changes.

We realize not all students understand and have the pattern completely understood by the end of the week, but we practice throughout the entire week to make it more concrete. To know there are reasons behind doubling the letter can be helpful to writers.
