We had our first lesson in Math on Friday (September 6th). Ms. Leom passed out the base ten blocks. Students had ten minutes to play and enjoy the blocks.
Then we got to work. Students were invited to work together in groups of three to make specific numbers using the foam blocks.
When we had some trouble working together, the lesson stopped. We met on the carpet, and Ms. Leom shared a mini lesson and modeling about what small group work might include. The mini lesson lasted less than five minutes, and we learned about including others, sharing, taking turns, being patient, and being respectful.
Base ten blocks are the building blocks, not only for math, but for collaboration and cooperative learning, for a successful year of learning.
