Tie-Dying T-shirts

On Thursday morning, our class was scheduled to tie-dye our t-shirts. It is very organized and runs smoothly. We are thankful to the many staff members who patiently share their skills.

Our work started on Wednesday, when students who had their t-shirts in school folded and arranged their shirts, adding rubber bands. We added tape tags to our shirts, so we would know which one was ours before we tie dyed.

Then Ms. Leom walked our shirts to the room where the action was taking place. The shirts need to be soaked in a special solution for about fifteen minutes to support the fabric holding the color.

Later, after specials, we arrived. Our shirts were damp and ready for our creative color ideas. Mrs. Stupar welcomed us and went over the directions. Details like "being careful with the color", "hold the bottle away from you", "move slowly", "keep thinking" were encouraged.

Social Worker, Mrs. Stupar welcomes us and explains the directions.
Students separated to open tables where adult helpers worked with us to share colors, give feedback and helpful advice, and clean up after us, so we would avoid adding color to the clothes we were wearing. Patience and kindness were necessities.
Social Worker Ms. Erickson and Academic Intervention teacher, Ms. Larsen help students at one table.

Special Education teachers Mrs. Asher and Ms. Peterson work at another table with students.

After we use the squirt bottles add color to our shirts, we put them into gallon Ziploc bags and placed them in our lockers. We washed our hands. In our home binders, we have directions about how to let the stain set (ideally 24 hours). Then rinse and wash.

We were tie-dye t-shirts on the third Tuesday of most months. The tie-dye reminds us about how every person is unique and special. We wear tie-dye t-shirts to promote and support anti-bullying efforts and creating a safe and welcoming culture in our school and community.
