K.I.Dee

On Friday morning, our class joined Mrs. Lepper's room. Ms. Lepper will be teaching Science to both classes. Ms. Leom will teach Social Studies to both classes. Ms. Leom was called to a "meeting", and Mrs. Lepper was sharing all about third grade, when trouble arrived.

Meet K.I.Dee. She is a "new" student, who doesn't know the rules ... chewing gum ... being loud ... taking over ... talking (or in her case, singing badly) ...

Sitting in the teacher's chair ... putting her feet on the desk ... taking selfies ... texting her mom ... listening to music ... "borrowing" someone's headphones without asking ... rolling her eyes ... stomping her feet ... pouting ...

K.I.Dee had a few things to learn about third grade and expectations. Luckily, she walked into a classroom with two groups of third graders who knew ALL the rules, and were very patient in pointing out all the trouble with reasons why these poor choices weren't a very good idea. Third graders patiently explained to K.I.Dee that we have rules and expectations to keep students safe and so we can learn.

K.I.Dee has another important role. When we know of a student having a tough time, we can focus on K.I.Dee, not the individual student. She is a visual that brings smiles, disbelief, and begins to develop our sense of community and what matters to our academic learning.

Ask your third grader to tell you more!
