Third grade, Room E123, struggled on Friday for listening. We had to review. When Ms. Leom is talking, students shouldn't be talking. Ms. Leom knows that students' attention spans are 5-7 minutes at most. She works hard to respect our developmental abilities, and she watches us closely to adjust her approach for our learning. Students still have some basic responsibilities.
We will continue to listen and develop our skills for optimal learning, and more importantly, so we can get to the meaningful work of having other people listen to us. Recent research in Ms. Leom's masters work taught her, "the person doing the talking is the person doing the learning". This is in reference to learners need to put the learning into their own words. It can be verbally, in writing, in pictures, and more. We need to listen to develop the skills and common language so others can listen to us!
