On Friday, we finished our first week of learning for Benchmark Literacy. Students started with reviewing Hyphenated Compounds words. We read "Family Camping" and students highlighted examples of Hyphenated Compound words they found.
Next, we applied our Main Idea and Supporting Details learning by writing our own example. One successful strategy for learning, is to DO and CREATE. Students had a graphic organizer they used to brainstorm ideas for the prewriting step.
Next, Ms. Leom modeled using the prewriting to create a rough draft main idea with supporting details paragraph.
Students had time in between each step of Ms. Leom's modeling on the board, to add their sentence.
It was exciting to see students writing. The class had thoughtful questions; like, "What if I want to add a different supporting detail than I wrote on my prewriting sheet?" It was enjoyable to read about all types of topics from our classrooms of experts!
