Today was a longer day in Communications. Today we combined our biography, main idea and details, and our ask questions learning into one entire class. We read a longer biography about Squanto. We asked questions, clarified, made predictions, and in our discussion determined the main idea and details.
We used "Texts for Close Reading" to access our story, "Squanto".
In Ms. Leom's Flex today, we took notes on our learning. We needed a copy of the features of a biography for our learning throughout the rest of the school year. We added it to our first section, notes, in our journal.
Then, Ms. Leom's Flex extended our learning to include learning about First Hand and Second Hand Information. In the past, this would be a lesson taught just before MCA's to make sure we had a lesson on this Common Core standard. Having it integrated into the beginning of the year lesson, allows us to build on it, model it, and identify it throughout the year as we read. We recorded the features of first and second hand information in our journal, using examples from our story, "Squanto". Students aren't ready to apply the knowledge, but it was exciting (probably more so for Ms. Leom) to begin the opportunity!
