Day 2 - the start

On the Second Day of School we had a lot to do!

Every morning, we start our school day with our high school helper. This former "Ms. Leom Alumni" is a welcome and appreciated addition to our learning. This morning, he was helping organize Student of the Week information and the next book order. Soon, he will also be working with students in the classroom!
For morning work, we wrote about the second day of school, what we want to accomplish, questions we have for our teacher, and an opportunity to write about anything you want your teacher to know about you. Then on the back, students worked on a number code.

In Ms. Leom's class, we shared our family posters we started yesterday in class. Students were able to "pass" if they didn't want to share. We will create a classroom book from our posters.

Ms. Leom's class also started writing in their cursive writing book today. We worked on the "Pretest" or beginning of the year writing sample.

Next, we switched! Ms. Leom's students went to Mr. Greninger's room for their first day of Math. Ms. Leom welcomed Mr. Greninger's room. Ms. Leom talked about herself, went over some of the basics. Each student received a personalized book marks for their reading.

Then, Ms. Prose and Mrs. Arens brought their classes into our room, and the students met a "new student" to our school, K.I.Dee (see the next post to learn more about this character!)

Mr. Greninger's class was invited to create family posters.

Tomorrow, we will share our family posters, then make a classroom book. We didn't get very far on our posters when more guests arrived for Passport Training.

Passport Training is the Milaca Elementary process to teach every student our school's expectations in the areas of hallways, bathrooms, playground, lunchroom, and on the bus. Passport Training takes place the first week of school, and individual classrooms practice, talk about, monitor, and continue working on our school expectations daily. Passport Training is organized differently for different grades based on the learning needs of the students. For example, school is new to a kindergarten student, and a primary student might benefit from a visual of the location to cue into the discussion. Our primary classes travel to the various locations and learn about the expectations. In the intermediate grades, many of our students have heard the same message about school expectations over the years, and they benefit and appreciate a more direct, to the point presentation. Different staff members come into each classroom and go over the expectations. We want EVERY student in our school to be successful and safe. We want students to clearly know the expectations in the different areas around our school.
Our principal, Mr. Voshell talked about the hallways.

He shared the hallway expectation poster.

Mrs. Jenson, from the Planning Room, talked about Bathroom expectations.

The poster is clear.
Social Worker, Mrs. Stupar talked about the Playground Expectations.
Asst. Principal, Mr. Meyer talked about the lunch room.

Travis Westling, represented the bus companies and spoke about the expectations on the bus.
Students had more classwork time to finish their Family Posters. Mr. Greninger's class will share their completed posters tomorrow morning in class.
