Hyphenated Compounds

This week as we started our Benchmark Literacy learning, we also started "Word Works". Although, we are not planning on any Spelling tests until October, we are developing our Spelling and Vocabulary skills. In this program, they refer to Spelling and Vocabulary as "Word Works". This week, our lessons are all about hyphenated compound words.

Students received the information sheet about this week's word study. We used our highlighter and pencil to clarify, write notes, and learn about this type of words.

Then we looked at examples of hyphenated compound words, eight at a time. We selected on word of each set of eight and wrote it on the back of our notes. While we were writing our words, Ms. Leom would share examples of how we might use some of the words.

If students find examples of hyphenated compound words when they read, they can put a scrap piece of paper to mark the page, bring it to school, and Ms. Leom will give initials on Responsibility Cards this week.

Mr. Greninger's class worked on the notes on Monday. They worked on Student of the Week writing this today. They will select their words and learn about their opportunity to earn initials in class on Wednesday. We were flexible with our learning as we made the benchmark fluency testing (how many words you can read in a minute) and the fire drill fit into our schedules today.

There is more hyphenated compound word learning to come.
