ORF Benchmarking

On Tuesday, fourth grade had ORF Benchmarking. ORF stands for Oral Reading Fluency. Benchmarking is something we do three times a year. We track students' progress. We know that students who are more fluent readers, free of "brain space" to comprehend. If you have to spend a lot of "brain space" decoding every sound and word, your brain struggles to do both skills at the same time.

Students sit in the hallway, outside of the Media Center and read while they wait their turn.

Our ADSIS and Title One staff listen to students read reading passages and assess how many words they read in a minute. Staff keep track of errors. The information has been tracked since Kindergarten, and we can see progress over time. The ORF test is a fairly accurate strategy for us to determine the amount of reading students participate in during the summer.
