Then students got started on step one. They cut out the pieces. Examples of what we needed were posted on the board, by the directions.
Then we started to organize our poster and put it together.
We started to learn about the four types of sentences and the punctuation used for each.
We lifted the colorful flaps, and wrote the definition on the back. Students could see the definition on the board in large print. It was also modeled on the "teacher poster" on the board. While students worked, Ms. Leom walked around and gave feedback and support.
We played a game. Ms. Leom would name a definition, and students had to flap the flap for the type of sentence she was defining.
Next, Ms. Leom gave a sample sentence for each type. Students wrote their own sentence on the white paper under the flap.
We checked our work for capital letters in the beginning of sentences and punctuation marks at the end of sentences.
Our last step was to see what we retained. We did a "Tickets Please" activity. On the board, Ms. Leom modeled the expectation. On a sticky note, students needed to write their name, choose one sentence type, and write an example. Ms. Leom modeled what that would look like. Our classroom poster hung on the board for any student who wanted to peek for a quick review.
Students completed their sticky note, and placed it on the Tickets Please bulletin board with their iPad number.
