Plot

Today our area of study was plot.

You can see our learning targets are an important part of every lesson.

We continue to use Tacky the Penguin (linked for anyone who is not familiar with the story) by Helen Lester. We started last week to introduce Character Traits ... then the series of Tacky books to teach setting ... and back to the original Tacky the Penguin book to teach Plot. Often, students read a book, and they think, "That is it! Read it! Done! Time to move on." When we are testing, or reading a manual to build or fix something, we have to read for deeper understanding. This means we may reread several times. By now, Tacky is so familiar to us, it is a great book to apply to a "new" skill.

Several students remember Plot as a the "beginning, middle, and end of the story". This is a basic idea of plot. It is time for us to develop new vocabulary.  Using the story of Tacky the Penguin, we introduced how introduction ... rising action ... climax ... falling action ... and the resolution would work.

Students took notes in their flex journal. As we progress during the year, when students run across these skills, they will have their individual "tool" to use to review as they need the information.

We started to apply our skills of characters, setting, and plot, when we ran out of time. This happens. We will continues our practice of these skills in the coming days.
