Our Reading learning this week is a genre study on biographies. Our first biography was about Cesar Chavez. I enjoyed our "before" reading activity. Before we read, we often will have a full table discussion about what we think we know. We thought Cesar Chavez was a famous baseball player. Others thought he was an expert at working with dogs. Even when your predictions don't fit what you read, it is meaningful for your brain to be thinking before you read.
In biographies, we are looking for the following parts:
- a hook
- a birthplace and time
- information about childhood and family
- character details - what does what the person say, think, do tell us about him/her
- what did the person do (to make them worthy of a biography)
- a quote
We are reading through the lens of details in a genre. We will be reading about Marian Wright Edelman and Squanto next.
