Ms. Leom's "elf" (aka Mr. Leom) came to cause some mischief. The class loves when they notice the changes in the direction signs. First, all the signs were upside down. Ms. Leom changed them. On another day, when he arrived, Ms. Leom was meeting with student in the hall, and the class immediately cued her in on the shenanigans. That has never happened with previous classes. Usually, they try to see if Ms. Leom will notice. It is fun to have classroom jokes and understandings. People come in and say, "Did you know your directions are upside down?", and we smile, and explain, "There is an elf that visits ..." Sometimes you just have to see it to believe it. Sometimes you just have to be there to understand what makes it magical. Sometimes having something silly is just part of belonging and building community.
Ms. Leom's classroom has an elf. He is taller than what most people imagine when they think of an elf. He makes us smile and helps us look forward to future surprise visits.
