QR & Padlet

This morning, Ms. Leom's morning message had a special learning opportunity for her homeroom students. They were invited to use their QR Code reader that we downloaded the first week of school.

The QR Code, took us to Padlet, an online "bulletin board" (see image below).

There were directions on the board, and the question was written in big letters, so students could read it from around the room. It only took a few students to realize they were so eXcItEd to use this new technology for learning, that they didn't stop to read the question, and wanted to get right to the writing. We adapt to meet student needs for success!

In addition, as we've been reading our book, we stop at the end of every chapter and do some whole class summarizing. So students who needed some support in answering the question, had our class notes on the bulletin board as they enter the classroom available.

The exciting part of using this Padlet, every student had a voice. EVERY opinion mattered and had value. We quickly learned how to edit, how to add color, and we could see some examples of what our peers were thinking about to add to our processing. Ms. Leom also had some feedback about what skills she can develop and support in answering question in class, and what she needs to support in building background knowledge so students can better connect with the book.
(purposely blurry to respect student work)
What makes this so important in how classrooms are evolving for the better. In the past, students would have written this on post it notes, they might or might not all stood in front of a display, to read the other responses. If they decided to make changes, they might questioned redoing it, , or if Ms. Leom wanted to talk about it, she would have had to look at it later, then come back to it. It took a little longer, because one or two students still needed to download the QR Code App. Some students needed a little bit of thinking time. It was our first time using these skills, but in under ten minutes, we had a communication tool that we were all able to use, discuss, and make changes in immediate time. What a fun way to engage students and share in their many voices!!

It was an exciting morning to think about the class book we are reading for our Global Read Aloud!

Please note, this Padlet is a private board and only accessible by the students who have the QR code. Student safety and privacy is an important consideration for our learning.
