Rereading

One skill we are working on in Fourth Grade is REREADING for a purpose.

First, Students read the story with a partner. Using sticky notes, they looked for the features of personal narratives: setting, character description, one event, dialogue, and thoughts and feelings.

Next, we reread it together as a class, focusing on our reading strategy, sequencing.

On the second day, we read the text for a third time. We focused on looking for examples of thoughts, feelings, and actions. Each list was developed with each class.

Rereading with a purpose is the skill students need to use to be successful when studying or taking tests. For each question on an assessment, students should reread that section of the test, and look for evidence in the text to support their answer.

This can be frustrating for students who often want to "just be done".

We weren't finished with this text! Our last step was to use this text to write an opinion argument. It is a writing standard that students write an opinion argument.

Students received copies of the opinion argument goals and steps. We worked on this together. Ms. Leom modeled what each step might look like on the board and talked about what to do. We were able to work with her. When class time ran short, we reviewed and finished it on the next class day.

Rereading our texts matters. It is carefully modeled, used, and part of several days of class.
