Top Secret

Then this showed up this week ...

There is curiosity. There are questions. There are suggestions. We just can't keep away.

Can't wait to see what the next learning adventure will be!

Homecoming Pepfest

We attended the Homecoming Pepfest on Friday afternoon. We were thankful to the Varsity Pepband who played as we entered, throughout, and played as we left. They set the tone.

We entered the gym, greeted by members of the football team

Our mc's welcome us to the Pepfest
We were introduced to the Homecoming Royalty
One of the football coaches, Mr. Talberg, spoke to us
we were introduced to the football captains
the varsity football players invited down the youth played
the royalty, varsity and youth football players sent us back to class

What a great end for a full week and a great beginning for the weekend! It is fun to take advantage of the K-12 building and be a part of this community event!

Work Time

On Friday, we made time for students to work. Ms. Leom and Mr. Greninger were available to support students who need help. Students who were caught up had some iPad choices.

Queen

Ms. Leom's class met the Queen today. The Homecoming Queen was coming down the hallway today, and as an alum of Mr. Greninger and Ms. Leom's classes ... we were THRILLED to congratulate her!!

As teachers, we are thrilled to have six of our alums on the Homecoming court this year! We often tell our students that our alums go off and "do amazing things", and here is just one small example of some of the adventures that wait our students and their friends. Homecoming isn't just about the royalty, it is about the many different ways students can be involved in school, their community, and participate. Love how our Hawaiian day look and the high school's neon day reflect our participation!

So proud of ALL our alumni and the adventures they experience beyond fourth grade! Go Wolves!

QR

In Ms. Leom's Flex class, students downloaded the QR app. Everyone will eventually be using the QR app as the school year progresses. Sometimes it helps to have a few students with experience ready to support the learning!

Ms. Leom created a Google Slide presentation about our Geography Vocabulary. Students were able to scan to the QR code to access the presentation. It allowed them to see an example of a project they would be working on in class.

After students saw the example, they started making their own Vocabulary Google Slide presentation. They had to make their cover and start on their first slide. It is fun to listen to students help each other.

Can't wait to do more with QR codes, Google Slides, and collaborating with our classmates!

Hook

This week, we are preparing to rewrite for our personal narrative. First, we had to learn about Hooks.

So many exciting personal narratives in process!

Spelling Read

This week, Ms. Leom introduced the Spelling Read assignment. Each week, there is a practice opportunity for students to READ and identify the pattern in the text. It is a wonderful learning opportunity, because it often brings up examples and opportunities to see the spelling patterns in context and ask questions for discussions.

First, Ms. Leom introduces the name of the assignment, "Spelling Week 3 Read".

Next, we record the pattern, "Challenging Plurals" and examples: "-s, -es, e, um to a, is to es".

Then, we write the steps: 1.) Read. 2.) Find a pattern. 3.) Label.

Ms. Leom models for us, in the first paragraph, with student input after the first or second example. She gives us a number (on the left) of about how many examples are in each paragraph.

Then we work with a partner as we practice in paragraph two. Talking and working together is encouraged. Ms. Leom walks around the room and monitors our work; providing support and answering questions.

We go over paragraph two as a class. Questions students asked in class, or learning we discovered is added ... challenging plurals includes the words that stay the same from singular to plural: "shrimp" and words that change spellings all together: "mouse to mice".

Students continue to work with partners on the remainder of the sheet.

The lesson begins again with a new class.

We always like when we can learn from each other!

In the second class, the "Ava's" (apostrophe s) was noticed. What a great discussion and learning opportunity. In today's education, the teacher doesn't "pour in the knowledge", but facilitates and encourages opportunities for students to be engaged and take ownership in the experience. Talking and collaborating with others is a big part of the experience.

We also didn't all have to "finish" this assignment. We were able to practice, and when the time was over, students turned in their paper, and we were able to move on to other learning opportunities.

Inspiration

Reading teachers love when their students want to read. It was with great joy, that for a week, the Maud Hart Lovelace books sat on the back cart, as students noticed them and began to anticipate the opportunity to read them.

In addition, Ms. Leom is reading The Terrible Two to the students in her class. She often will project the copy on her CleverTouch board, so students can enjoy the illustrations and follow along as she reads.

Today, after some interest, students were invited to check out these library books and read the Maud Hart Lovelace 2019 candidates for the award. It was with great excitement, we could see students selecting, talking, studying, and sharing these books.
