Then, she goes over the homework. We start by writing our names on our paper (and Ms. Leom walks around the room, checking). Then we write the due date, label it as "homework" and a reminder about completing two sides.
Next, we go over the directions, read the words in the word box, and Ms. Leom explains and models what is expected. In a few weeks, students will be able to lead these steps, with Ms. Leom mentoring and supporting.
We go over the same steps on the back of the paper. Note this week, we added directions, "write the words". This is important this week. Research indicates that students are more likely to remember what they write out.
Then Ms. Leom has students put their papers in their Home Folders. Students are encouraged to work on it IN class, when they finish other learning early and have extra time, at the end of the day when the homeroom teacher reads, or students can take the work home. It can be turned in early. It is due on Friday.
We go through the work very specifically and methodically every week. If your child doesn't understand, please encourage him/her to come see Ms. Leom. She would love to work with her students to help them.
Also, if your student didn't spell the words correctly, they may rework the learning and return it for an improved grade. The intention is that students will get tired of having to rework the learning and slow down the first time.
